Just stumbled upon this worthwhile (hour-long) lecture by Nobel Prize winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman on the subject of intuition, or what he calls "system 1" versus "system 2" which is 'reasoning':

Interesting lecture. He is talking about "learning" and performance as opposed to intuitive responses to the environment that have to do with safety, preferences, orientation, movement, etc.
Interesting that "doubt and ambiguity belong to system #2". I liked his concept of anchoring, that we want things to be congruent and we will make that associative connection.
